Tour on Medieval Athens and the Rizokastro

Dipylon participated in the series of events of the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum, entitled "The Museum meets the City".

In the foundations of the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum, a part of the Medieval city wall of Athens, known as Rizokastro, is preserved. On this occasion, Vanda Papaefthimiou, Leda Costaki, and Annita Theocharaki, together with the museum curator, Antonis Bekiaris, conducted a guided tour of the remains of Medieval Athens around the museum. Then, inside the museum, they presented a historical overview of the Athenian fortifications with the help of digital maps. They discussed the walls’ importance for the organization of urban space, the city-wall gates and the roads that led to other parts of Attica, as well as the re-use of earlier architectural members and entire sculptures in the masonry of the walls. At the end of the event, from the museum’s terrace with a view to all of Athens towards the north side of the Acropolis, we had the opportunity to visualize the course of the Themistoklean city wall running through the modern city.
